Ultrasounds, also known as sonography, are imaging tests that use high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the body. These non-invasive tests are commonly used to view organs, tissues, and blood vessels, helping doctors diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions. During an ultrasound, a small handheld device called a transducer is moved over the skin, emitting sound waves that bounce off internal structures and return as echoes. These echoes are then converted into images that can be viewed on a monitor. Ultrasounds are safe, painless, and typically quick, making them a valuable tool in medical diagnostics.
